ICE Raids Hamline Elementary School in Chicago

On Friday, January 24, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrived at Hamline Elementary School in Chicago, prompting swift action from school officials. The John H. Hamline Elementary School confirmed that ICE agents were present on the premises, but staff followed established protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of both students and staff.

In a statement issued by Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova, she explained the school’s response to the unexpected visit. “Earlier Today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents showed up at Hamline Elementary School. School staff followed CPS established protocols. They kept ICE agents outside of the school and contacted CPS law department and CPS office of Safety and Security for further guidance."

Chkoumbova emphasized that no agents were allowed to enter the school, and they were not permitted to speak to any students or staff members. “The ICE agents were not allowed into the school and were not permitted to speak to any students or staff members,” she affirmed. “Here is the bottom line, our students and staff are safe. Our protocols were followed.”

The school district’s response highlights its commitment to ensuring the safety of all students, regardless of their immigration status. The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about immigration enforcement in schools and the impact on students and their families.

Despite the denials from ICE, the Chicago Police Department, and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said the agents “presented credentials and shared that they were from ICE.”

The incident at Hamline Elementary comes amid broader concerns about immigration enforcement policies, particularly those put in place during the Trump administration. Under Trump, ICE was given increased authority to conduct raids in sensitive locations, including schools and churches, which had traditionally been considered safe zones for vulnerable communities. Critics of the policy argued that these actions created fear and disrupted the education and religious activities of immigrant families. While the Biden administration has signaled a shift in enforcement priorities, the legacy of these policies continues to influence how local authorities and schools respond to immigration enforcement within their communities.
